                                                                                 MAHARSHI VITTHAL SHINDE

 > Born - 23 April 1873, Jamkhindi (Karnataka)


 > 1893 Admission to Ferguson College, Pune, Financial support from Maratha Education, Society and Sayajirao Gaikwad


 > 1898 - Entered the prayer society.


 > 1901-1903 - Unitarian in the United States.  Scholarship announced by a monotheistic student for comparative study of religion.

  • On the way back - I read the dissertation 'Liberal Religion in India' at the International Religious Conference in Amsterdam.


 > Oct 18.  1906 - Depressed Classes Mission begins


 > In 1912, a joint dinner was held for untouchables and Brahmins at Ferguson College, Pune.


 > 1917 - Congress convention passes anti-untouchability resolution due to Shinde's efforts (President - Annie Besant)


 > In 1917, a public meeting was held in Mumbai under the chairmanship of Narayan Chandavarkar and demanded that Babasaheb be honored.


 > 1924 - Participated in untouchable temple entry at Vaikom (Kerala).  (With Sadhu Shivprasad)


 > 1928 - Farmers Council at Pune


 > 2 Jan.  1944 - Death  At Pune


 > Depressed Classes Mission - 18 Oct.  1906
 (At Mumbai)

 • Objectives - (1) To spread education in the untouchable society

 (2) Providing job opportunities to the untouchables.

 (3) To solve the problem of untouchables.

 (4) To get the support of the society to prevent untouchability.


 > Tasks
 (1) To open schools for untouchable children, to open hostels

 (2) Sewing classes in untouchable areas.  To run.

 (3) To organize lectures and kirtans for enlightenment.

 (4) to serve the sick,


 He started branches of this organization in many villages.  His sister Janakka also took part in it.

 • Conducte untouchability prevention conferences in many places.


 > Vs.  Ra.  Shinde was influenced by Mill and Spencer.


 > The writings of Maxmलरller, Agarkar, Ranade, Bhandarkar were influential.


 > Around 1898, he entered the prayer society.  Prayer served to spread the community.  Along with Dr.  Bhandarkar, N.M.  Joshi, Ranade

 • Prayer is one of the main principles of society - prayer is another way of worshiping God.  But prayer does not lead to material things.  Prayer is not for material gain but for spiritual upliftment.

 • So when Lokmanya Tilak was arrested vs.  Ra.  Shinde offered prayers in the prayer society.  After this fall, the local churches were hit hard.  Ra.  Shinde removed this prayer from the society.


 > Dwarkapeeth, the great Kalipurush of modern times

 •  Shankaracharya had protested against him.



 > Shetkari Parishad was held in Pune in 1928.

 • After that he also held farmers' councils in Mumbai, Terdal, Borgaon, Chandwad.


 > Tried to stop alcohol, Devdasi method, Murali, Shimga festival.


 > With the help of Raoji Bhosale in Pandharpur - 'Orphanage'
