Maharshi Karve

Atre's career began with a widow's marriage and resulted in the establishment of an independent university for women's education.> Born - 18 April 1858 Sherwali, Murud (Dist. Ratnagiri)
> Education - Primary education was done in Murud village. He came to Satara on foot from Kumbharli Ghat to sit for the sixth examination. Went to Mumbai for further education. He passed matriculation in 1881 and did his B.A. from William College, Mumbai in 1884. A. Urtin.
> Jobs - After Tilak resigned from Ferguson, Gokhale appointed him as Professor of Mathematics. He also worked as a teacher at Elphinstone High School. Inspired by Ranade, Gokhale, Naoroji, Agarkar. He was a life member of the Deccan Education Society. (Until 1914)

Married Godibai, a child widow from Pandita Ramabai's 'Sharda Sadan'. (1983) She was named Anandibai. In the ashram she was called 'Baya'.
• He had progressive ideas regarding widow marriage. When he took action, he was socially ostracized.
• In 1893, he set up the Widow Marriage Prevention Board / Widow Marriage Promotion Council to promote widow marriage. Through this organization, remarriage family gatherings began to be held.
• He toured all over Maharashtra to convince people of his views on remarriage.
> Orphanage Girls' Home (1899) - Started at Sadashiv Peth, Pune and later moved to Hingne due to plague. • At this time he had to endure the opposition, criticism and humiliation of the orthodox people. But the ashram worked to instill confidence in the lives of widows.
> Mahila Vidyalaya (1907) - At Hingane
For the purpose of educating ordinary girls.
> Nishkam Karma Math (1910)
• Slogan - "To expand the team by creating a team that offers body, mind and money for public service."
• Karve founded Nishkam Karma Math because he wanted to serve the society without any selfish attitude.
> Women's University (1916)
Karve believed that spreading education among women was a sacred duty of religion. So they thought there should be an independent university for women.
• Some features of the university mentioned by him
(1) The medium of instruction should be the mother tongue.
(2) As English is an important language, he continued his teaching in the university.
(3) It will cover topics that are conducive to the personal development of women, such as singing, health, science.
(4) University should be established according to the physical and mental differences of women.
• Courses in this University - Training Degree, Home Science Degree, Nurse Degree
• In 1920, Vitthaldas Thackeray donated Rs. 15 lakhs to the university and the university was SNDTed in the name of Nadal's mother.
